Abstract: Among the several theories related to organizational decline, the Threat Rigidity thesis is one of the most cited. This is because it provides a simple but adequate explanation for many real instances of organizational failure. In accordance with this theory, threats will lead organizations to enter a stress-induced phase, which, in turn, makes them rigid. This rigidity has negative outcomes for an organization, such as leading to a restricted flow of information and increased control concentrated in the top management. Although being one of the most cited theories in strategy, its testing and empirical confirmation has been attempted only in a very short list of papers and the overall result has been mixed (Plotnick &amp; Turoff, 2010). To verify the theory, I propose a reorganization in the internal constructs in Threat Rigidity and test whether it affects another organizational-level construct (Market Orientation), through a partial-least squares structural equation model. The results obtained demonstrate that the internal reorganization holds true, and that Threat Rigidity affects organizational Market Orientation. I further verify two antecedents to Threat Rigidity (Crisis Response and Organizational Reputation) and the results show that both directly affect Threat Rigidity. Both Organizational Reputation and Threat Rigidity (as tested before) affect Market orientation, but Crisis Response only indirectly affects it, through mediation of Threat Rigidity. The overall results assist in redressing the Threat Rigidity concept, offer insights on the internal components of the theory, and opens horizons for future research on antecedents and consequences of Threat Rigidity.

<title>Caracterização da inovação em negócios de impacto socioambiental: proposição do framework 5W2H da inovação em NIS</title>

Abstract: Social and environmental impact entrepreneurship plays an important role in the sustainable development of nations, just as innovation is a strategic pillar for obtaining competitive advantages in business. Seeking to reconcile financial results with positive impact on society or the environment, this type of venture is revolutionizing the way investors, entrepreneurs, and society interact, becoming more than an abstract term, but a necessity for companies to prosper in the 21st century. However, for the potential of social and environmental impact businesses (NIS) to be fully explored, enabling both the expansion of underlying benefits and financial sustainability, innovation emerges as a premise. Thus, this research aims to characterize innovation in the context of social and environmental impact businesses. The study was developed in two stages, the first focused on identifying the characteristics of innovation in NIS based on the literature (dissertation study 1) and the second focused on interviews with entrepreneurs, using qualitative methods to apply an innovation characterization tool to the twenty ventures studied (dissertation study 2). As a result of study 1, a framework for characterizing innovation in social and environmental impact businesses was developed, using published articles; additionally, it was possible to analyze the characteristics of innovation in empirical articles. In study 2, it was possible to explore the concept of innovation based on entrepreneurs' perceptions, thus allowing, after applying the 5W2H of innovation in NIS, the identification of possible areas of action for both entrepreneurs and incentivizers. As results of this research, in the academic field, the dissertation contributes by proposing an original framework for analyzing innovation in NIS, in addition to characterizing innovation in this context. In the business sphere, the study provides practical subsidies for entrepreneurs and managers of impact businesses to understand their own innovation processes. The results of the study have significant impact potential for different dimensions of society, especially in the academic, business, and public spheres. In the realm of public policies, the research findings reinforce the importance of fostering sustainable and inclusive innovation environments that consider the territorial and sociocultural particularities of entrepreneurs.

Abstract: Knowledge constitutes a fundamental strategic asset of organizations, being decisive for the generation of sustainable competitive advantages, as postulated by the Knowledge-Based View (KBV). From this perspective, innovation emerges as the result of an organization’s ability to acquire, assimilate, transform, and apply knowledge, a process directly associated with the development of absorptive capacity. The search for scientific and technological information, which composes what is known as technical intelligence, finds in patent databases a repository of codified knowledge. However, its exploitation is hindered by the large volume of documents, linguistic heterogeneity, and the terminological complexity characteristic of patent texts. Patent text mining thus constitutes a challenging yet essential task to enable the systematic acquisition of this technical intelligence, acting as an enabling mechanism of absorptive capacity by reducing cognitive, linguistic, and technical barriers to external knowledge. In this context, theoretically guided by the Knowledge-Based View and methodologically grounded in Design Science Research (DSR), this study seeks to answer the following central research question: how can the acquisition of technical intelligence from patents be enabled so as to allow its internalization and articulation with an organization’s internal knowledge through a text-mining method supported by an ontology? The overall objective is to propose a text-mining method, supported by semantic and linguistic ontology, capable of enabling the acquisition, assimilation, and transformation of the technical information contained in patents within the organizational context. The thesis is structured into four interconnected studies that consolidate knowledge on patent mining, map its evolution, and identify gaps, with particular emphasis on the integration between TRIZ and text mining. The research is pioneering in proposing and validating a hybrid patent text-mining method that combines Artificial Intelligence, through large language models, with a derivative logic supported by a functional semantic ontology based on TRIZ physical effects, originally developed for the Portuguese language. The results demonstrate that the articulation between TRIZ, text mining, and AI strengthens organizational absorptive capacity and provides an empirical and conceptual basis for transforming technological information into strategic knowledge, directly supporting Research, Development, and Innovation activities and enhancing the competitive potential of organizations and innovation ecosystems.

<title>Aprendizados em ambientes de inovação internacionais comparados a realidade brasileira</title>

Abstract: Innovation-promoting environments play a strategic role in the effectiveness of public policies for science, technology, and innovation, particularly in emerging economies such as Brazil. Despite the existence of a consolidated legal and institutional framework, significant challenges persist in the local operationalization of these policies, reflected in the low attractiveness of innovation programs, limited integration among actors, and difficulties in generating measurable economic and social impacts. In this context, this study aims to identify recurring effectiveness factors in internationally consolidated innovation environments and based on these lessons, to develop a Best Practices Guide to support the management of local innovation environments in the Brazilian context. The study is grounded in the understanding of innovation as a systemic, relational, and territorially embedded phenomenon, drawing on the theoretical foundations of innovation systems, open innovation, network governance, and the ecosystem approach. Methodologically, this is an applied qualitative study with an interpretive perspective, structured as an international comparative multiple-case analysis. The empirical base comprises immersive field observations, informal exploratory interviews, and document analysis conducted in innovation environments across six countries—United States, Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Israel, and Portugal—selected according to the 2024 Global Innovation Index. Data were systematized, categorized, and analyzed using Inductive Thematic Analysis, enabling the identification of both analytical and emergent constructs associated with ecosystem effectiveness. The findings indicate that the effectiveness of innovation environments depends less on the isolated existence of instruments, infrastructure, or financial resources and more on systemic organization, strategic clarity, functional operational governance, consistent integration with firms, the adoption of hybrid funding models, the strengthening of legitimized leadership, and the construction of trust-based relationships and continuous learning processes. As its main practical contribution, the study proposes a Best Practices Guide structured into sequential and adaptive stages, designed to reduce the gap between innovation policy design and local-level implementation. Rather than adopting a prescriptive or universalizing approach, the guide serves as a flexible, action-oriented framework to support public and institutional managers in decision-making and in navigating complex and dynamic innovation environments.
